ABOUT

Launched in 2015, The Fiber Studio has quickly gathered a reputation as the go-to site for fiber art & design lovers to discover new artists and find fiber inspiration.

Once seen as ‘women’s work’, fiber art and craft used to be regarded as a pastime with no real place in the art world. The products of craft were often regarded only as utilitarian or decorative items. Times are changing (if a little slowly), and you can now find examples of quilting hanging on the same gallery walls as oil paintings. The Fiber Studio encourages and embraces this new inclusive attitude towards craft as art.

The blog delivers weekly posts on everything from photorealistic portrait embroidery to experimental kinetic fashion.

Head to the home page to browse through post categories. Among the traditional fiber art techniques of weaving, embroidery, crochet etc., you’ll find some less traditional categories such as ‘non-fiber fiber-art’ where artists use traditional fiber techniques with ‘non-fiber’ materials, like knitting with wire or glass. In the ‘natural fibers’ section, you’ll find art created with organic materials; human hair, feathers, and even spider’s webs.

If you’d like to stay up to date with the latest in fiber art and design, you can sign up to our email list, and we’ll send you monthly blog roundups so that you never miss a post. You can also find The Fiber Studio on social media via the icons on the right (or below if you’re browsing on a mobile device).

The curator of The Fiber Studio, Katie Wells, is a London based artist with a background in art history. Her abstract works in paint, oil pastel and thread have a playful approach to colour and form, with a strong graphic element. The best place to get to know Katie and her artwork is her Instagram account.
